Wassim: "However, I feel like I found who I really am here, in Japan."

I remember my parents telling me my time in Japan is only a caprice, a fantasy which will soon fade away. However, I feel like I found who I really am here, in Japan. For me, it was definitely not a spontaneous decision to come here.

The first time in Japan was with my friend traveling. After returning back to France, those reminiscences of Japan never died away. So, I bought another ticket within 2 months and now I am here, not as a traveler but as a student studying in Japan.

Every day is a new day, and you don't know what you'll do the next day. In France, we say “Vivre au jour le jour”. This means: Don’t think about tomorrow, just live this day. This is how I enjoy the day without thinking about the future. I know some people like it when everything in a trip is planned, but not for me. I'd rather just see how it goes.

My parents’ idea is slowly changing, but even now, they still don’t really understand.

両親は、僕の日本での滞在を将来には役に立たないただの無謀な「夢」だと言っています。しかし、日本にきてやっと本当の自分自身とは何なのか見つけ出すことができました。私の日本に来るという決断の裏には、決して中途半端な気持ちはありません。 日本には、友だちとの旅行がきっかけで初めて訪れました。故郷であるフランスに戻ってからも日本のことがずっと忘れられず帰国してから二ヶ月後、日本への航空券を買いました。そして今 私は、観光客としてではなく上智大学生として、ここ、日本にいます。 毎日は常に新しく、明日何が起こるか分からないからこそ、明日のことは考えず、ただ今日という日を精一杯、生きることが大切なんだと思います。フランス語に“Vivre au jour le jour”という言葉があります。それは、不確かな未来に不安を感じるより、今この瞬間を全力で楽しむという意味です。例えば、旅行をする時でも、全て計画するのが好きな人もいますが、僕は何かに自分を縛ることなく、その時の自分の気持ちや状況に応じて、自由に決めるようにしています。 今、両親の考えは少しずつ変わってはきていますが、まだ全部を理解してくれはいません...でも、私は自分の決めた道を進みます。
