Yutaro Yamamoto: "In the most difficult times, just smile and lead others."

先輩たちが留学生と仲良くしていて羨ましく思っていた。自分の英語が通じないかもしれないと怖かったからだ。だからこそ、SISECをみんなが楽しく過ごせるように盛り上げたいという思いでこのサークルの会長になった。でも、英語でどう盛り上げたら良いか分からず悩んだ。だから、英語をもっと勉強し、「人生の最も嫌な辛い苦しい時に、微笑みを持って担当せよ」という言葉を忘れずに、留学生と上智学生の交流イベントを行ったりした。そのイベントの一つのサマーキャンプで、留学生も不安を感じながら日本に来ていることを知った。でも、その不安を喜びに変えたのはSISEC、「日本においてのホームはSISECだ」という留学生からの言葉がとても嬉しかった。SISECの会長になって良かった。

I often envied my senpais (seniors) who were friends with lots of exchange students because I thought that my English wasn’t good enough to talk to them. But then, I became the leader of SISEC (Sophia International Student Exchange Council), a type of club with the purpose of creating an atmosphere where everyone, both international and Japanese students, can enjoy talking with each other. However, I came across a problem on how to communicate with my limited English knowledge. So, I studied English more, keeping in mind the quote: “In the most difficult times, just smile and lead others”. I tried to make events for the Sophian and the exchange students to interact more.

One of those events was the summer camp, where I learned that it wasn’t only me that was worried about leading, but the exchange students were also nervous about coming to Japan. However, when the exchange students told me that to them, their home in Japan is SISEC, I was more than happy. I am so glad that I became the leader of SISEC.
