Episodes from the tour in the Philippines.

Sota: When I had a chance to talk with a small boy, he asked me, “how old are you?” I was a freshman at that time, and I answered “18”. Then he asked me, “aren’t you married?” and “don’t you have children?”, which really shocked me- I still remember the situation. He made me realize that going to a university at the age of 18 is not something that is usual for them. In that moment I thought to myself, “going to university doesn’t define everything, but this boy would have so many more possibilities in the future if he had more access to education.” I think my motivation for participating in activities came from this episode.

Sumire: When we visit the local homes, we gain a lot of “thank yous” from various people- from people working in the home to children’s parents. The funding that Meguko sends cannot be considered as enough, but we feel happy that we are contributing to helping others at least in some ways with our activities. We want to keep making efforts for gaining more “thank yous” and inspiring the children, who are yet small but have dreams of becoming teachers and firemen- professions that strive in working for others.

Yukari: This is a story from when I did a homestay in a slum area. One child from that home had a cousin who wasn’t able to go to school and he couldn't speak English. However, he tried really hard to communicate with me with the small number of English words that he knew. I strongly remember how impressive it was, and he was so happy when I gave him a pen before I returned home. I have experienced various situations while working in Meguko, but the time that I spent with him is one of the most important memories I have. I’m sure I will never forget him.

そうた： 小さい男の子と話す機会があって、その子に「何歳？」と聞かれ、当時一年生だった僕は「１８歳」と答えたんです。するとその子に「結婚してないの？」「子供いないの？」と続いて聞かれ、衝撃を受けたことを今でも覚えています。１８歳で大学へ進学するという、僕の中での「普通」が、彼らの「普通」ではないのだと気付かされました。進学することが全てではないけれど、もしこの男の子にも教育を受ける機会があったら、もっと将来の可能性が広がるのではないか、とも思った瞬間でした。僕が活動の中でモチベーションを得たきっかけは、このエピソードにあるように思います。

スミレ： 現地を訪れると、施設の人から子供達の親御さん達まで、色んな方々から何度も「ありがとう」という言葉を頂きます。決してめぐこの送る支援金は十分とは言えないけれど、少なからず私たちの活動は誰かのためになっているんだなっていうのを感じられて、毎回すごく嬉しく思っています。教師や消防士といった職業を将来の夢にあげるような、幼いながらも人のために何かをしたいという思いをもつ子供達のために、そしてまた「ありがとう」と言ってもらえるように、これからも頑張りたいです。

ゆかり： スラム街でホームステイをした時のことです。そこの家の子達には従兄弟がいたのですが、その男の子は学校にも行けていなく、英語も話せませんでした。でも彼は、知っている数少ない英単語を紡いで、一生懸命私と話し、関わろうとしてくれて、それがとても嬉しかったですし、印象に残っています。帰る際にも私の持っていたペンをあげたらすごく喜んでくれて。めぐこでのエピソードはたくさんありますが、彼との出会いはその中でも大切なものの一つです。あの男の子のことは一生忘れられないでしょう。
