Follow your bliss. Follow what makes you feel alive. For me, passion is just a reflection of your values in practice.

I chose to go live along the Sumida river in a cardboard box in January 1997. My first night that I was along the river, I remember coming back feeling scared and afraid, not from my physical state, but that I might be doing something wrong or just being stupid. But in the same moment, I felt so alive. I never felt more alive and that’s because I’m living out my values.

There is a shift from “What is my purpose?” to “What makes me feel alive?”

Every morning I come in and clean the toilets downstairs. I do that even though I’m the boss, because it’s a way of showing those who come in here using the facility that I’m glad they’re here. For me, it’s an expression of “I want you to have a good experience here with us.” That makes me feel alive when you see it in that framework. “What makes you feel alive” led me to better decisions. : “What meaning am I going to give this?”. That’s the power of our imagination.

You might have to spend some time searching, and sometimes it feels like you’re lost and not heading the right way. That’s part of the process. Keep to your values, generally you don’t do wrong. The universe generally opens up doors for you.

至福に従って、生きていると感じられることに従って。私にとって、情熱は私の価値観を反映したものに過ぎません。

1997年1月、私は隅田川の川沿いでダンボール生活をすることにしました。川沿いでの最初の夜、ダンボールに住むという物理的な恐怖ではなく、自分は何か間違った馬鹿げたことをしているのかもしれないという恐怖を感じたことを覚えています。でも、それと同時に生きているという感覚もしっかり味わいました。こんなにも自分の価値観に沿って生きたのは初めてでした。 この経験を経て、「私の目的は何か？」から「私を生きていると感じさせるものは何か？」という問いに変わりました。

私は毎朝下の階のトイレ掃除をします。私は上司ですが掃除をします、そうすることでこの施設を使う人達に、「あなた達がここにいてくれて私は嬉しい」と示せるからです。私にとって「ここで私達と素晴らしい体験をしてほしい」という表現でもあります。その枠組みの中で私は生きていると実感できるのです。「私がこれを与える意味は何か」それは私たちの想像力です。

あなたは何が自分の価値観か、何が正しいのかとすぐに答えがでないかもしれない、迷って正しい方向に向かっていないと感じるかもしれません。でもそれは過程の一部です。あなたの価値観を大切にしてください、間違ってはいません。この宇宙はいつでもあなたのために扉を開いてくれています。
