Antonino: "Japanese say ‘Sumimasen, so sorry’ one thousand times a day and it’s very important.

I used to work with my family and friends on my family’s vineyard back in Italy, where I am from. Over time, I developed this philosophy that I will always remember, and it is to enjoy every moment and make the most out of it. My family found a way to enjoy our time while we worked. We had to work all day long, which can be exhausting, but we always made sure to keep each other in high spirits by singing and making jokes.

When I arrived in Japan, this mentality deepened. My friend and I were lost in Shinjuku station for over an hour. Eventually, a Japanese old man came up to us. He was really kind and brought us to the station we were supposed to take. This old man said ‘Sumimasen, can I help you?’ was very Japanese for me. Japanese say ‘Sumimasen, so sorry’ one thousand times a day and it’s very important.

I love these things because this relation with others is important for you— having moral respect for other people. In Italy, people forget the significance of these attributes, especially during hard times. "People have to be kinder and respectful of others, because we are all Italians, no?”

私は出身地であるイタリアで、家族と友人と共に家のぶどう園で働いていました。そこで「一瞬一瞬を楽しみ、人生を最大限に活用する」という考えを持つようになりました。私の家族は仕事中でも「楽しむ」ということを意識していました。長時間働くのはとても疲れますがいつも歌ったりお互いにジョークを言い合ったりしてモチベーションをあげていました。そしてこの精神は日本に来たことで更に深まりました。 私は以前友達と新宿駅で1時間以上迷子になったことがあります。困っていると、歳をとったある1人の男性が私たちのところへ来て、親切に私たちの目的地まで案内してくれました。この男性が言った「すみません、何かお手伝いしましょうか?」という言葉は私にとってとても日本人らしいものです。1日に何度も使われるこの言葉は日本の文化においてとても大切です。 私はその言葉が大好きです。何故なら、そういうかたちで人間関係を保つこと~つまり道徳を持ち他の人を尊敬すること~はとても重要なことだと考えるからです。イタリア人は、特に自分のことで精一杯の時にこのような事を忘れがちです。同じイタリア人として、他人に親切で敬意を持つべきです。そう思いませんか？
