On my very first evening here, I met a girl at a bar in Shibuya. I never expected to have such a strong bond with someone here in Japan. I mean, all I could say was "hajimemashite" but we made it work.

We share the same way of thought and that's what really brought us together. We value making each other and people around us happy, something that's not necessarily always the case back home in Munich. Like the first time I met her family, I tried to bring the dishes to the kitchen because, in Germany, it’s expected of the guests to clean up after themselves. But, they told me "no, no, sit down, you should relax, don't worry". I think this kind of a thing is important and I see it everywhere in Japan.

Japan showed me a lot I didn't expect. She actually, ended up being my girlfriend and we've been together three months! It's true that I didn't have a pre-set reason for coming here, but I've found a pretty good reason to stay.

日本に着いた日の夜、僕は渋谷のバーである女性に出会いました。当時は、日本でこんなにも深い絆を誰かと築くなんて全く思ってもいませんでした。僕が唯一言えたのは「はじめまして」ぐらいだけでしたが、何か通じ合えるものがあると感じました。

彼女に惹かれたのは、考え方が似通っていたからです。それは、２人ともお互いのことや周りの人を大切にしているというところです。僕の故郷ミュンヘンでは、必ずしもそういった人ばかりではありません。

例えば、ドイツでは、お客さん自身が後片付けをするのが当たり前なので、彼女の家族に初めて会った時、僕はお皿を下げようとしました。けれど、彼女の家族は「良いのよ、座っていて。くつろいでて大丈夫よ」と。このようなことはとても大事だと思いますし、日本でたくさん見かけます。

日本は僕が予想しなかったことをたくさん見せてくれました。実は、今、彼女とはお付き合いをしていて３ヶ月になります！最初は特に日本に強く惹かれていたわけではないですが、日本にいるとても良い理由をここに来てから見つけることができました。
