Matsushima Shiho: Actually, my name “志保(Shiho)” means "to keep aspirations"

My family and I moved to New York in my third year of elementary school and for six and a half years I went to a local school there. After returning to Japan, I was often told: “it must be great being a returnee” which to me, sounded more like envy or sarcasm. I was a “foreigner" in the States, and a "returnee" back in my own country, in Japan. So you can imagine, why I felt I had lost my sense of belonging from time to time.

At Sophia University, I am surrounded by a diverse student body, including exchange students, who are more accepting of me. I feel like a lot of my friends here are “weird” in a good way, of course. I guess, we all mutually accept our own “weirdness”, which is why it feels very comfortable to be here. I've also had the chance to meet people I've never met before. Having grown up in a co-ed environment, I never knew girls who grew up in an all-girls school and now they are my friends.

My life motto is to “take it easy and don't overdo it”. I've had instances where I got sick from wanting to do too much within a limited time. So, I always try to prioritize what I really want to do even if that means I have to sacrifice some other things. Actually, my name “志保(Shiho)” means "to keep aspirations". Just like my name my parents gave me, I aspire to live life my own way.

小学校３年生からニューヨークに引っ越し、その後６年半、アメリカの現地校で教育を受けました。帰国後、よく耳にしたのは周りからの妬みか嫌味かのようにも聞こえる「いいよね帰国子女は」という言葉でした。移住先のアメリカでは「外国人」、 母国である日本でも「帰国子女」として扱われ、自分の居場所を見失いそうになる事もありました。

高校を卒業して入学した上智大学では、様々なバックグラウンドを持つ生徒や留学生が多く、私を受け入れてくれるような生徒ばかりでした。実際に私のまわりにいる友人も良い意味で「変わっている」子が多いイメージがあります。そして、その「変わっている」性格を皆それぞれ受け入れているのでとても過ごしやすいです。今までずっと共学の学校に通っていたので上智大学で知り合った女子校出身の友人の雰囲気の違いなど、今までにない出会いもたくさんありました。

私は「無理をしない」事を人生のモットーにしています。なぜなら、私は限られた時間の中でやりたい事がとても多く、無理をして体調を崩す事があったからです。何が本当にしたいのか、何を優先するべきなのかという取捨選択をし、何かを犠牲にして自分が本当にしたい事に取り組むようにしています。今後も両親がつけてくれた志を保つという意味の「志保」という名前の通り、我が道を行く生き方をしたいと思っています。
