My father was going to have an open heart surgery the week after my interview with the Tokyo YMCA. They told me I had two weeks to decide, but I said “no, I’ll decide right now.” I called my mother afterwards and told her that I was going to Japan within the next two months. Our family had a general agreement that we weren’t gonna tell my dad until after the surgery, that way he wouldn’t be so worried. However, one of my aunts, the night before he has the surgery, says to him: “I can’t believe you’re letting your daughter go to Japan.” My mother was screaming! She tells me that this was the reason why he was in the ICU for only one day, and out of the hospital in a week — he desperately wanted to talk about it! It just so happened that at the time, there was a special on TV about Western women who would go to Asia thinking they were going to teach English, but end up becoming a hostess. For this, my uncle Mario kept calling my dad to say “you never know what they do in Japan.”
