I come from Minnesota, the whitest place I’ve ever been, and I’m not just talking about the snow. The population demographic in our city was 97-98% white. There was little diversity, and it drove me nuts to live among all those white people. It’s strange to think I would come to homogeneous Japan, but I was intrigued by the idea of being different. In 1987, I was sent to teach English in Ishikawa prefecture. I think I was the only white guy, the first non-Japanese the people had seen since the 3rd century. The advice given to me was “Remember that you will get used to them, but they will never get used to you.” I did get used to being different, but I kept in mind that you can change other people’s minds, one person at a time. I was told that I wouldn’t make Japanese friends or be allowed into their inner circles, but through experience I realized it wasn’t true. Even though it takes longer, the friendships I made have been stronger and more enduring. In my class, we read about people who don’t quite fit in. These texts are not necessarily about weird people, but about all of us and how everyone is trying to find their place to belong. Regardless of the difficulties of being a foreigner in Japan, I do consider it my home, and I’ve found my place here at Sophia too, where the best part is the diversity of the student body.
