Nicole Wang: "Let be be the finale of seem."

If 2017 was a chapter of my life I would title it "The year of Seijin 成人 (coming-of-age)". I thought I had already become an adult at 18, but turning 20 this year made me feel like I've become more independent. I had my first waitressing job, I met my relatives in Indonesia for the first time, and then I came to Japan. It was all so fresh to me.

Back in my home university in Melbourne, I actually major in creative writing. I write scripts for movies and compose poems (those are my favorites!). Actually, I have a lot of ideas that I haven't turned into stories yet - like my trip to Japan. I have a favorite quote from an American poet, Wallace Stevens: "Let be be the finale of seem". When I read that I really liked it. It's about following your dreams and letting your imagination become reality. "In retrospect, looking back on my time here in Japan, parts of it feel so unreal, like a feeling that this kind of life will never happen ever again. It is exclusive to the winter of my 20s".

もし2017年を私の人生の一章として題するなら、「成人の年」です。18歳を迎えた時、私はもうすでに大人入りしたと思っていましたが、20歳を迎えた時はさらに自立した気がしました。初めてウェイトレスとして働き、インドネシアへ行って初めて私の祖父母の兄弟方にお会いし、そして初めて日本を訪れました。そのすべてが私にとってとても新鮮な経験でした。

母校のメルボルン大学では創作執筆を専攻し,映画の脚本や構成詩(私のお気に入り！)などを書いています。実はこれから物語にしようと思っているアイデアがたくさんあります、例えば日本を訪れた事とか。

私のお気に入りの名言でアメリカ詩人のウォリス・スティーブンスの「「であるらしい」の最終版は「である」でないとな。」という一文があります。私はこれを読んだ時にこの名言がとても好きになりました。夢を追い続けて自分の想像を現実にする、という意味合いがあるような気がしたのです。振り返ってみると日本を訪れていた期間中、もう二度と起こらないような、そして非現実的な感覚を味わう経験もありました。私の20歳の冬だけにしか起こらない特別な経験です。
