James: "Thousands of miles away from New York, but I felt right at home there."

I was devoted to cross country and track before getting the Shingles that ended my sports career, so I needed a new outlet. By accident, or possibly by fate, through a class at university, I stumbled upon the Japanese language. This led me to apply for a traveling program throughout Asia, including Tokyo. After going to a Tokyo Giants baseball game, I knew I needed to stay longer. I felt the sense of community - everyone was cheering together until some even lost their voices, something that never happens with Americans and American football. Thousands of miles away from New York, but I felt right at home there.

There is a quote I live by: “...the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be? (from “The Dead Poet’s Society”)” Life is so grand, and there is so much to pursue that the impact you make is so little, but you should view that as an opportunity to make mistakes. When making a big decision, anyone can get scared. Even on my first plane coming here, I freaked out. Yet, I know that the business trip, my exchange here, and every other decision I have ever made- they are only a part of my verse.

私は陸上に情熱を注いでいました。しかし、病気により陸上を断念せざるを得なくなり、新しい何かに挑戦したかった時に、偶然なのか運命なのか、大学の必修科目で日本語と出会いました。この出会いをきっかけにアジアのビジネス旅行プログラムに参加する事になり、初めて東京に訪れました。私はジャイアンツの試合で声がガラガラになるまで大声で応援をする日本人の姿をみて、アメリカでアメリカンフットボールを観る時にはない一体感を感じました。その経験がきっかけで日本のことを深く知りたいと思い、長期滞在することを決意しました。母国のニューヨークから何千マイルも離れた地であるにもかかわらず、なぜか日本には安心感を覚えました。

「力強く続く物語に君も一篇の詩を寄せることができる。君はどんな詩を？」 「今を生きる」という映画の中の台詞でありますが、これが私の精神の軸になっています。これは、人生はとても壮大なもので可能性は無限大である一方、一人ひとりの影響力はそれほど大きくはないということです。だからこそ、失敗を恐れる必要はないと思います。 大きな決断を下す時、不安になるのは当然です。僕だって日本への飛行機に乗った時とても怖くなりました。なぜなら、現地で何が待っているか分からなかったからです。しかしビジネス旅行や、今の留学、そして今ままで全ての決断は僕の人生の詩を完成させるために全て必要不可欠な経験なのです。
