Liana: "Here, no one is judged for how they are dressed."

I was the youngest in my class but ironically I felt like I was the most mature. I think this was because I am the oldest daughter in my family and I always had to look after everyone. I always try to set a good example for my little sisters and that influenced me to try to be a good leader. This qualified me for a full scholarship to Sophia University in Japan while me and my family were considering universities in the United States.

I chose Japan because it was a new culture, and a new adventure. In Micronesia, girls are expected to dress modestly. Here, no one is judged for how they are dressed. It was hard to grow up as a girl in Micronesia. When I had an injury from playing basketball, a nurse told me “that’s why girls shouldn’t play sports.” I felt restrained and knew I wouldn’t be happy if I lived there.

I do miss the tightly knit community. In Micronesia, it’s all one big family spread over the islands. In Sophia, I have the opportunity to gain more family members and homes from different countries. My mom said to me “before you settle down and make permanent decisions, go travel and see the world and you will know that you want to do in life.” This is the time to find myself and these four years will make a difference.

私は高校のクラスで1番年下だったけれど、1番大人びていたと感じていました。それは、自分は長女であり、いつも周りの面倒を見ていたからです。常に妹達にとって良い見本になれるよう気にかけていた事が、自分を良いリーダーに創り上げてくれたのだと思います。そのおかげで、上智大学への奨学金を貰うことができました。家族とはアメリカの大学への進学を考えていましたが、日本に来ることになったのです。

新しい文化や生活感を求め、日本に来ました。日本の女の子は着ている服で批判されることはありませんが、私の故郷ミクロネシアでは、女の子は派手な服を着ることができません。そのため女の子として、ミクロネシアで幼少期を過ごすのは大変でした。ある日、バスケットボールで怪我をしてしまい病院を尋ねると、医者に「だから女の子はスポーツをするべきじゃない」と言われました。その時、このまま自由がない生活を送ったとしても幸せにはなれないと確信しました。

島全体が一つの大きな家族のようなミクロネシアを恋しく思いますが、家族の様に親しい友達や自分の新たなホームを見つける機会が上智にはあると考えています。母は私に言いました「定住するところを見つけようとする前に世界中へ旅に出なさい。そうしたら自分が人生で何をやりたいのかが見えてくるよ」と。今は自分を見つける時であり、この4年間は私を大きく変えることになるでしょう
