I’m a high school drop out. One day in my 3rd year I decided that it would be more conducive to my general happiness if I stopped going to school to stay at home and play computer games. There was a long and tiresome battle with my parents who of course, could not understand for the life of themselves why their first born son all of a sudden decided to stop going to school. I saw a lot of counselors and many people came to talk to me, but nothing worked. I just didn’t want to go to school. But one day, as I was sitting in church, I just got this feeling. A lot of people say God doesn’t speak to people, but I believe he does. That feeling told me to try applying for a university in Japan. I thought “Hey, why not. I like Japan, I like anime, I’ll just do it.” so I did. It was fueled partly by my weeb nature, but mainly this nagging feeling in my heart. I went to take my SATs, and I applied to Sophia with a 2100 and a 3.9 GPA… and I got in! I’m definitely not one of those Christians who go around preaching, but if someone were to ask me what my secret to happiness is, the answer would be to put your faith in God, because He’s the one that pulled me through that.

僕は高校を中退しました。３年生のある日、学校なんか行かず家にいてパソコンのゲームをしていた方が、僕の総合的な幸福に繋がると決心したからです。もちろん、なぜ長男が突然学校を辞めると決めたのかどうしても理解できない両親とは、長くてうんざりするような口論ばかりでした。たくさんのカウセンラーと話したり、多くの人が話しにきましたが、何も効果はなかったです。僕はただ学校に行きたくなかった。でもある日、教会で座っている時にある気持ちに襲われたのです。神が人々に話しかけることなどないと多くの人が言いますが、僕は違うと思います。その気持ちは僕に、日本の大学に出願してみるよう言いました。「まぁいいか。日本は好きだし、アニメは好きだし、やってみるか」と思い、そうしたんです。僕の日本オタクな気質も理由にはありましたが、主には心にあったこの拭い去ることのできない気持ちが勢いを与えてくれました。SATを受けに行き、2100点と3.9の評定平均を上智に出願し…受かりました！僕は説教してまわるようなキリスト教徒ではありませんが、もし誰かに僕の幸せの秘密は何かと聞かれたら、答えは神への信仰を持つことです。なぜなら、神様のおかげで色々と乗り越えられたから。
