Mr. Peter Owans: "I hate it when people say “it’s impossible”, “muri”

I moved from Hamburg and came to Sophia during the bubble economy; everything you touched turned gold in Japan. I had some classmates who came to school in Porches and Benz while I didn’t even have money to buy lunch at the cafeteria! It was difficult for me to find part-time work since most Japanese people were not used to foreigners, let alone a black person at the time. I was actually behind paying my tuition and dormitory fee. For 6 months I hadn’t paid anything so I was close to behind 1,000,000 yen. I was kicked out of the dormitory, told to submit my Student ID card and leave Sophia! I had to change my student visa to a cultural visa, but just when I thought everything was falling apart for me, I found part-time work at an Indian restaurant and started saving up so I could return to Sophia.

I still didn't think it was fair, how I was kicked out. After 6 months had passed, I went back to the admissions office to reapply and I remember the Dean saying, “how are you going to finance yourself this time?” All I could hear was, “you can’t do this, you don’t have the money, this school isn’t for you.” Ironically, it became my key motivator, I hate it when people say “it’s impossible”, “muri”. So I showed them what I saved and backed by a new guarantor, I got accepted back to Sophia. If I look at all this negativity, I would have probably left the country having nothing good to say about Sophia or Japan. Now, the story has changed completely. Having built a successful company that I sold to Benesse Corporation in 2009, I can say today that I am an example of the Japan Dream. You really do have to be stubborn and push to see how far you can reach!

私はハンブルグから上智に編入しました。当時バブル真っ只中の日本では触れるもの全てがゴールドに変わるようでした。私がお昼を買うお金すらない中、ポルシェやベンツで登校する友達もいました。当時の日本は外国人への抵抗がありアルバイトを探すのにとても苦労しました。そして学費や寮費が払いきれず半年間でおよそ100万円を延滞してしまいました。後々寮を追い出され、学生証を提出し上智大学を去れとまで言われ、私は学生ビザから文化ビザに変えなくてはいけなくなりました。私の中の全てが崩壊していくように感じていた時、インド料理のレストランでアルバイトをみつけ上智に戻るためにお金を貯めるようになりました。 しかし、私はまだ大学を辞めさせられた事に納得がいきませんでした。半年後に事務局へ行き再度入学手続きをしにいったところ、学部長に「今回はどうやって資金を調達するつもり？」「あなたには無理よ、お金がないならあなたに合った大学ではないです。」と言われた事を今でも覚えてます。皮肉なことに、この発言が私のモチベーションを上げました。私は人に「不可能」や「無理」と言われるのが大嫌いでした。そこで、自分の貯金額を提示し、新たな保証人の元で上智に戻ることができました。もし私は自分のおかれた状況を悲観的にみていたら上智や日本の事を語れることのないまま国を離れていたと思います。ここから私の人生は大きく変わって行きました。私は2009年に成功した企業をベネッセに売るほどになりました。今では私は「ジャパンドリーム」の例だと思っています。頑固になり、どこまで高みを目指せるか、自分の背中を押すという事がとても大切だと思います！
