Yuki Toko: "Of course, what made me who I am today is my family."

I have a so-called “typical family”. We used to go on family trips together when I was young. My father is my friend and my mother, a bit overprotective. Despite being an only child I was never reliant on my family. However, I do feel like they tried to push their ideals on me. For a person with different opinions on what Japanese society expects- to enter a ‘good’ university and get a job in a ‘good’ company- I don’t completely agree with my parents. I was able to escape their way of thinking because I spent more time by myself now that I've moved to Tokyo for university and spent a year abroad. Of course, what made me who I am today is my family. If I see myself as an airplane my family is the runway: I need them in order to fly and to come back down to when I'm on the verge of breaking down. I don’t think I need to be with my family constantly, but it's very scary to think about starting something without them. I've been thinking about what kind of family I want for my future the past year but I feel I’ll never have a clear idea unless I get married and have kids. I just know now that I want to marry a strong girl who can go against my mother and rock a pair of aviator shades.

私の家族は典型的な核家族です。幼い頃は年に数回家族旅行に行っていました。父親は私に干渉しすぎず、一緒にいて心地良い友達のような存在。一方で母親は少し感情豊かで、そこそこ保守的です。一人っ子で、物心ついた頃からやんちゃな性格をしていたので、家族には依存していませんでした。しかし、やはり育つ過程で親の考え方に私の考え方も寄せられていたような気がします。親の考え方に疑問を持てるようになったのも、自分が成長して親と立場が近づいてきたからだと思います。人生にはレールがあり、成功がわかりやすいモノサシで測れるという考え方に疑問を持つ僕は、親の会社選びや人生一般に関しての意見はあまり理解できません。 大学進学で上京したり一年間海外に行ったり、1人の時間が増えたことで自立して、親的な考え方から抜け出せた感じがします。 ただ、私の土台となっているものは家族です。私を飛行機とすると家族は「滑走路」です。飛び立つために必要なもので、旅を終えたら戻ってくる場所。信念や生き方を大事にするため、常に家族と一緒にいる必要はないと思っていますが、家族という存在がないと思い切って行動するのは怖いのかもしれません。 私がどんな家族を築きたいかここ1年くらいずっと考えてますが、結婚して子供ができるまでわからない気がします。ただ、ティアドロップのサングラスが似合って、母親と対抗できる強い女性と結婚したいです。 -常井裕輝、法学部、日本
