Quentin Lim: "Family will always be first for me."

I failed a class freshman year of high school. When my mother found out, to my surprise, she said, "We'll figure it out. It's okay." She didn't scold me. Even my whole family was understanding. Yet, no matter how empathetic my family was, I began to regret it. I realized that I couldn't fail any more classes, so now, I'm more careful about taking risks.

It taught me to take responsibility for my actions. My family lets me do anything as long as I keep that in mind, something that I'm very grateful for. They've always been supportive and never told me "no" just so I can have the freedom that they never had when they were my age. They've done everything for me, and I couldn’t have asked for more. Everything they did, if not for me, was for our family. That's why, in the future, I want to give back. I will give them all the support they need so that they don't have to worry about their retirement plans. Family will always be first for me.

私は高校一年生のとき単位を落としてしまいました。母がそれを知ったとき、驚くことに「一緒にどうにかしよう、大丈夫。」と言って、私を叱らなかったのです。むしろ家族として受け止めてくれました。しかし、どれだけ家族に理解してもらったとしても時間が経つにつれ、自分の中で後悔し始めそれ以来もう同じ失敗は二度としたくないと心に決めました。だから今は何においてもリスクには気をつけています。この経験により私の行動にともなう責任を取ることを学びました。ありがたい事に、家族には私がそれを常に心に留めている限り、私がしたい事は自由にさせてもらっています。家族はいつも協力的で、両親が私の年頃だった時に得られなかった機会を私にできるだけ与えるために私のしたい事に対して反対した事はありません。両親は私のためにできる事全てをしてくれていて、これ以上望む事はないくらいです。 両親がしてきた事は、必ずしも私のためでなかったとしたら、必ず家族のためにしてきた事。だから将来は恩返しとして、両親が退職するにおいて心配する事がないように必要なあらゆるサポートをしたいです。 今までも、これからも私にとって常に家族は第一の存在です。
