If I had waited a week, he may have gotten killed by his own people. But I said OK, and I responded immediately. I realized that when people need your help, they need your help then and there. They’re not asking you for something three or four weeks away -- and you can’t plan for something like that. With journalism especially: you have to take the opportunity as it comes. When stakes are high, if you don’t take that chance, and if you don’t do it quickly, that person might not be around anymore.
