Yuina Uno: I went to LA for an internship program and realized that feminism can actually be a profe

Seven years ago, I was so sure that I wanted to work with event planning but when it came time to choose my university major, all of a sudden I didn't know anymore. I wanted to go into International Business and Economy because it can always be used in the future. However, my older friend suggested that I should choose a major based on what I really wanted to learn.

I decided on political science because of the amazing experience with my professors. Learning about the world's current events actually became really fun to learn for me. I also encountered the topic of feminism. I never really thought about turning it into a career, but then I had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that helped me change my mind.

I went to LA for an internship program and realized that feminism can actually be a profession. The people I met at the office were as passionate or more about feminism than me. It was fun being there and made me realize that this is what I want to do in the future.

I only have four more classes that I can take in Sophia but I'm still not done studying, there's so much that I still want to learn! I decided to apply to grad school in the UK, because of the excellent gender studies programs. I had never even considered receiving my Master's degree before. Because of my incredible professors and the opportunities that appeared when I decided to choose what I love rather than the most common and “practical” choice, I discovered I could study what I love AND pursue a career in that area.

7年前まではイベントプランニングの仕事に就きたいと思っていました。しかし、大学の専攻を選択する際にわからなくなってしまいました。また、将来のために国際ビジネスと経済を専攻しようと思っていましたが、先輩に専攻は、今の自分が本当にしたい事を軸にして考えるべきだと言われました。

結果、私は教授との最高の経験をきっかけに政治学を専攻しました。世界で起きている時事問題を学ぶのが大変楽しく、中でもフェミニズムについてとても興味を持ちました。実際に自分のキャリアに繋がるとは思っていませんでしたが、なんと人生に一度きりの素晴らしいきっかけがありました。それは、以前インターンシップでロサンゼルスに行き、"フェミニズム"というトピックを仕事にかえる事ができるという事に気づけたことです。インターン先のオフィスで出会った方々は皆フェミニズムについてとても熱心な方達でした。私はその環境にいるのがとても楽しく、将来の仕事に活かしたいと思いました。

上智ではあと4科目しか授業は受けられませんが、学び終えたとは思っていません。まだまだ学びたい事がたくさんあるからです！そのため、私はジェンダーについて学べるイギリスの大学院へ応募する事にしました。今までは修士号を取るなんて考えた事もありませんでした。本当にやりたいことを選んだからこそできたチャンスや素晴らしい教授たちとの出会いのおかげで、好きな事を仕事にできるという事に初めて気づかされました。
