For me, the biggest challenge of being a professor is ensuring that the students care about peacebuilding in far away countries. Japan has enjoyed sustainable peace for almost 70 years, so some students may take this for granted. But I think this mentality that we shouldn’t bother can be very dangerous, and creating sustainable peace everywhere is crucial for people all over the world, including those in Japan. If a country is left alone with no governing ...forces this can create problems which can have consequences across the globe. We need to make a collective effort to create peace.

I believe, for my own development as a researcher, it’s necessary that I keep going into the field. To gain the richest knowledge of the latest developments of mediation or peacebuilding I need to experience them in person. I feel that what I can learn from simply reading a book on the subject is very limited. Obviously, I cannot bring students to the most dangerous areas. But, I think it’s my mission to have those experiences on a near-constant basis and share them with the students. That way, perhaps the students might become a little bit more motivated about travelling to those countries and developing a commitment to peacebuilding themselves.

私にとって教授としての一番の挑戦は、生徒の方々に離れた異国での平和構築の大切さを確立させることです。約７０年間持続した平和に恵まれてきた日本にいる生徒の方々にとって、この特権を当然のことのように捉えている方も多いと思います。しかし持続的な平和を構築することは場所かかわらず、日本を含む世界中の人にとって大切なことなのです。この当たり前の精神は、時によりとても危険なものになりかねません。もし正式な統治下に置かれていない国を置き去りにしてしまうと、国際的に重大な影響を与える結果に陥りかねません。また、個人的に研究者として前進を続けていく上で、現場へ足を運ぶことは必要不可欠だと思っています。現地での最大限かつ最新の平和調停開発の情報を得るためには、自身が実際に体験しなければいけないと強く感じます。個人的に本から学べることは至って限られていると思うのです。もちろん生徒の方々を危険な地域に連れて行くことは不可能ですが、現地での体験をする機会を常にかつ身近に共有できるようにすることが私の使命だと思っています。それによって生徒の方々がそのような国々に足を運ぶことや、それぞれで平和構築を追求する決意をする意欲に少しでもつながると信じています。
