I want to teach my students to see things in ways that are different from what is conventionally taught in a Japanese classroom setting. Even at the highest elite institutions there is sometimes a lack of awareness about social issues, but I feel like my strength is teaching both male and female students about gender equality and critical thinking. Feminism has become such a dirty word around the world, especially in Japan. It’s become distorted and misunderstood, and that's why I help CNN news programs to raise awareness about gender issues, such as sex and love, in Japanese society. Women have to learn how to be confident and I know that’s something I can teach, because I think I'm a living example of that. I really encourage my female students to speak up and assert themselves in class, to help them be confident not only as a woman, but as a human being. I still feel like there are some limitations in Japan when it comes to women's positions in society, but I came to Sophia because I thought that it was something I could teach my students to overcome. Most graduates of top universities stay in Japan, but Sophia students often become influential on an international level like they already have throughout history. I know they will become people who contribute to global societies and I am proud to help prepare them for their future.
